Carder’s Diatreta glass was is inspired by the rare ancient cage glass pieces made about the fourth century A.D., which were produced by massive cutting of a heavy-walled vessel. Carder’s Diatreta pieces were made by the cire perdue process, demonstrating how fully he had perfected this method of glass casting.

All Diatreta pieces were made between about 1945 and 1959, and like the other cire perdue objects, were doe entirely by Carder in his factory-studio with the exception of some finishing, such as grinding on the bases. Nearly all are signed and dated.
