Issue 2724
from David Chadwick-Brown
The brown aurene millefiori on the left comes from an unimpeachable source, along with his citation of a validating comparable from a Skinner auction of a similar piece in red aurene. The auctioned piece was a pepper (#570), with silver cap, whereas this one has neither cap nor threading, so can also be classified as a vase.
The green piece is classified as a vase, and is just five numbers later, with 575 STEUBEN incised on the bottom. I have noted in Gardner’s line drawings that it is pictured in Plate IIIB, though I don’t know how I came to that conclusion, since neither height of mine (3 7/8ths inches) nor shape match the gold aurene in Plate IIIB. Now, where is that complete millefiori, and am I prepared to mortgage the home for same…?
