We will shortly be mailing out 2017 renewal envelopes for our members. We would love to save a tree and mailing costs to the Club by having as many members as possible go to the website and process their renewals before the envelopes are generated. From An End Of An Era To The Beginning Of A New Era

The transition from Frederick Carder to Modern Steuben.

We’ve reported earlier on the opening of the Martin Massman Collection of Modern Steuben at the WV Museum of American Glass, Ltd. In their October magazine, All About Glass, in an article entitled “Steuben Glass, The Modern years, The Martin Massman Collection of Steuben Glass” they feature in Figure 1, the following.

“One of the earliest and most influential designers at Steuben was Sidney Waugh (1904-1963). He joined with Arthur Houghton and John Gates in 1933 in effecting the reorganization and remained Steuben’s chief designer until his death thirty years later. He was a sculptor, known for his large-scale monumental and memorial works. One of the earliest pieces in the Massman Collection is an especially significant transitional work, as well as one of the earliest of the famous animal figurines, the No. 7698 Tropical Angel Fish (Figure 1 on the previous page). Its importance lies in the fact that it was designed by Waugh in collaboration with Frederick Carder. It is the only piece in the collection by Carder and one of eight by Sidney Waugh.”

Massman Collection Catalog

The WV Museum of American Glass, Ltd. had also published a catalog of all 210 pieces in the Martin Massman Collection of Steuben Glass. The catalog is over 200 pages, illustrated throughout at a cost of $29.95 for non-members and $25.95 for members. The website of the museum is www.magwv.com.
