The Countdown Is On

We are now one week away from the deadline for any submittal you might like to place in the Symposium’s dinner auction. As previously stated, you may consign an item, either with or without a reserve placed on it, in which case you would receive 90% of the final sale price, and a seller’s premium of 10% would go to the Club. You may also choose to donate an item, in which case 100% of the sale price would go to the Club (no seller’s premium applies.) Remember if you attend the auction on Saturday September 17, 2016, all items which you are the high bidder will be subject to a 10% buyer’s premium. National auction house premiums are now averaging between 20% and 30%, so our 10% is still “old school.” I humbly request if you do have any item(s) to submit for the auction, that you kindly adhere to the September 7, 2016 cutoff date. It helps me organize the final auction brochure. I thank you in advance for your support and consideration.

Sick Glass Recommendations

In response to Harry Morgan’s question on cleaning cloudy glass, the expert is Kim Carlisle in Sheridan, Indiana.
He’s the only guy I would ever send my stuff to.

I know that Roy Denson in Corning did this service and since he died I think one of his sons in Corning area still does it.

He did it by tumbling materials inside the piece to remove the cloudiness and polish it clear again.

Alan, Here is my experience with cloudy glass. I bought two Tyrone Crystal vases which I thought were just dirty. They were a thrift store find and so, it didn’t matter. Upon cleaning them, the film returned each time that they were dry. Most of the time, you can feel if glass has an issue because if it doesn’t slip easily through your hands, it probably has been in the dishwasher.

The science that I read stated that the detergent and hot water virtually remove the metal ions from the glass surface. But who believes science. So I tried most of the Internet fixes, soaking in vinegar, citric acid (lemon juice), toothpaste rub (even the whitening kind) and finally bleach. Nothing worked and the film reappeared like a bad neighbour.

Regards, Jeremy Hayes
