What is Eerily Similar to Carder

Perfume, Shape #3422, blue aurene,

teardrop stopper, signed “Aurene 3422,”

5.5″ h

from Janet Ziffer of Columbia, MD

The aurenes make especially beautiful cologne bottles, although I think of them more in a cabinet display than on a dressing table. Since blue is my favorite color, no surprise that I fell in love with this bottle. It sits on a shelf with several other blue and gold aurene colognes, and a Steven Lundburg King Tut vase in blue and gold aurene. He was one of the few modern glass makers who’s work looks eerily similar to Carder’s.

How Is It Done?

7014

Form: Vase

Comment from David Donaldson, MFA, Orlando, FL

Etched? Most definitely not. The edges of the Blue Aurene are smooth with the yellow surface and the iridescent finish is even across the total piece…….or so says the picture to my eyes. I believe the making is as follows…..and I may be off as well, but blowing glass for a number of years would lead me to make this vase in the following manner: 1. Gather the yellow on the blow pipe and form a cylinder; 2. have pre-made Blue Aurene ring / wide band with an interior diameter a bit larger then the yellow cylinder heating on a kiln washed steel plate ready to be worked; 3. Slide the yellow cylinder through the blue ring until it is next to the blow pipe attachment; 4. Blow the yellow cylinder so it expands to attach securely to the encircling blue ring; 5. The blue area can then be tooled into the desired configuration. (The blue ring might also have been shaped with its tentacles at the cold working shop prior to being used.)

My two cents from an old glass blower / Curator.

David P. Donaldson, MFA
