Getty ID System

Friday’s Gazette (#2334) featured a submission from Helaine Fendelman of NYC raising many questions on how to deal with the dispersal of your art glass, or any collectible. The first step is make a list. Helaine included a reference to the Getty ID System. As a result we received the following question.

“For a future Gazette could you please ask Ms. Fendelman to elaborate on the “Getty ID” system. What it is, how it originated, what it entails, etc.? I understand date and size but there must be more detail for “other essentials.” Please make it an anonymous question. ”

Helaine promptly provided an answer.

Alan:

In response to the question about Object ID, even I learned something! The name was changed but the cataloging system has not!

In 1993 the J. Paul Getty Trust began using what was originally called the Getty ID and is now called Object ID. Officially launched in 1997, Object ID, a trademark of the Getty Trust, is an international standard for describing art and other decorative arts objects adopted by museums, art dealers, appraisers, auction houses, insurance companies and major law enforcement agencies. The identification system includes 9 fields required for a minimum description of all decorative arts objects.
