Crushed Glass

from Objects of Desire, The Art of Frederick Carder by Alan Shovers

p. 57-60

In 1915 Mr. Carder developed Cintra glass. Cintra is created by picking up crushed and powdered colored glass on a gather of clear crystal which encases the particles. Frequently a fine matrix of bubbles was enclosed in the clear crystal layer.

The soft coloration and finish of this particularly tall vase combine several highly desirable glass forms and techniques. The base layer is green Cintra glass. The Cintra is cased with opalescent glass. Then the opalescent is acid cut to form the Astrid pattern. Finally, acid is applied to the pattern to bring it to a satin finish.
