Current Steuben Availability
from Scott Hansen of Stamford, CT
Take a look at www.steuben.com. The website has been updated since the introduction of the “new” Steuben glass formula. In addition to the original four reintroduced pieces (the Olive Dish, the Eagle, the Trout and Fly and the Handkerchief Vase – based on Carder’s Grotesque pieces), two other pieces have been reintroduced – the Snail and the Shore Bird – using the “new” glass formula. This suite of 6 pieces is referred to as “Iconic Reintroductions.” Other “new old stock” made from the “old” glass formula is also available for sale on the site.
Rich Warm Colors
from Art Glass Nouveau by Ray and Lee Grover
p. 145
Moss Agate glass simulates the colors as they are found in the mineral moss agate. (T)his ware is very rich in warm colors running into the browns, blues, and reds. Colored glass powders trapped internally in the glass in random patterns identify Moss Agate by Steuben. English, as well as continental sources turned out glass of the same name, but having once seen Steuben Moss Agate, there can be no confusion due to the radical differences in colors.
Continental Sources
from David Donaldson of Orlando
We cannot forget E. Leveille – E. Rousseau’s 19th century version. This example has a most unusual acid etched outer surface.
