Color me Coral

Question from Leigh Demrow of Janesville, WI

Alan, OK, is the rim of the candlestick “Rose du Barry” or “coral”?? L.A.D.

Marshall Ketchum says:

The Gazette number 1874 has some erroneous information. The trim color on Verre de Soie is Coral not Rose duBarry. I have not seen Rose duBarry used as a trim color. I have attached a drawing for goblet shape 3550 from the factory records and some of the data for that shape. For shape 3550 the trim color is clearly Coral. There is no reason to believe that Rose duBarry and Coral are the same glass with different names. In addition Cyprian is not just a name for Verre de Soie with Celeste Blue trim. Verre de Soie with Celeste Blue trim exists but Cyprian is defined as Celeste Blue trim on Carder’s Aqua Marine glass. Aqua Marine has the same surface finish as VDS but the glass has a light greenish tint.

Then, Lon Knickerbocker adds to the discussion:

There has been some different thoughts on the decoration color of Mr. Unger’s candlesticks and I will add to that a little later. First I want to comment on Rande Bly’s assertion that Cyprian pieces are not Verre de soie decorated with a Celeste blue sprayed rim, that statement is all blue. Both Verre de soie and Aqua marine are known to have been decorated with Celeste blue sprayed trim, the CMoG has both on display however 90-95% of the pieces are Verre de soie. I actually have all 4 styles of this glass in front of me as I speak, plain Aqua marine, plain Verre de soie and both colors decorated with the sprayed Celeste blue trim, oh just for fun I also have the yellow Verre de soie color in front of me, a small 938, the most common piece in this color.
Now, if some found records that indicated that the Cyprian name was actually given to the Aqua marine and Celeste version that would be a different story and perhaps Carder called both versions Cyprian?
