Update on Carder Memorial Window Project

The City of Corning Public Art Committee is very busy working toward a September celebration for the new public placement of the Carder Memorial Window. This committee has increased our fund-raising goal to $20,000.00. The “extra” money will be used for plaques, a new professional photograph of the window, and hopefully a very special celebration when the project is complete. Once again, this project will not happen without the support of the Carder Steuben Club and the support of a number of your members. Once again, we thank you.

Once we have the money Streeter requires to start work, the contract will be signed and work will begin. The earlier this happens the more assured we are to have the project fully completed by the end of August.

Kristin Swain and I are very busy planning fundraising events like the one in the attached newspaper article which, believe it or not, was on the front page of Corning’s Leader. Our plans now include appearing at the Rotary Club in a few weeks. We will also plan to present our program about the window in the next couple of weeks for the merchants on Market Street and throughout Corning.

With your help and hopefully help from groups like veterans groups etc. the window will be in place to welcome all of you in September with its beauty and technical achievement.

Here is a trivia note on information you might not know. The Carder World War I Memorial is made of Pyrex. Any order for architectural glass from Steuben gave the buyer a choice of Pyrex or Flint (Lead) glass in which to make the item. It was wise, if the piece were to be outside, to have it built in Pyrex, a borosilicate glass, that would weather better.

2013 Carder Steuben Club annual Symposium will be held at The Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY from September 19-21, 2013. The festivities will begin with Frederick Carder’s 150th birthday celebration on the evening of September 18, 2013.
