NY, NY

I just spent 11 wonderful days in New York City. That gave me time to visit Doyle New York and Bonhams’ auction houses to get a personal tour. I also had an opportunity to visit a wide range of antique dealers. Finally, Audrey Lipton quite generously let me see her fabulously developed Carder Steuben collection and demonstrate not only the artistry of Mr. Carder’s work by itself, but the artistry in connecting the glass within the environment of her apartment. Too often we get focused on the technicalities and forget to just look at the shear beauty of the glass and what it can do to expand its surroundings.

As I traveled from place to place I consistently heard one theme. You see very little Steuben in NYC. Another theme is we can’t get or find the better pieces to put up for auction or for sale.

A bit of a conundrum. It’s not readily available, so in turn, the market for it isn’t that great. If the public isn’t seeing it readily available, it loses some of its desireability. The example given is Tiffany. Lots of it available and therefore, that availability begets a market. Certainly a lot that can be talked about.

Another theme I heard was that with Steuben’s closing it has negatively affected the market and desireability of Steuben.

I don’t know the answers to all of this, but thought I should report what I heard from a number of sources.

A THANK YOU

Thanks Bobby Rockwell,

Very Scholarly and most informative. A real eye opener as to the fake after market globes which I never knew exsisted. I always do so appreciate your “Heads-Up” information.
