A Thank You Note

John Styler sent in a piece about Max Erlacher, master engraver at Steuben on Wednsday. He provided a link to the CMoG website reporting on Max.

Also, I would point out that the CMoG website is rich and fun to explore. In that exploration much more can be learned about Max. His wife Kitty responds to John Styler.

“Good Evening, Mr. John Styler,

Thank you for your interest. Lots of people don’t know Max’s given name. For the record and, for posterity, I will tell you that his name is: Max Roland Erlacher, born 07/11/33, Innsbruck, Austria. Arrived in Corning, NY on 04/24/57. Arrived in Corning, NY on this date, hired by Steuben Glass, division of Corning Inc., as ” Fine Art Master, Copper Wheel Glass Engraver”. At that time, he was the youngest person ever to have attained that Degree, Certificate, Recognition, and Title from the State of Austria. As far as I know, this record stands. Thank you so much for recognizing and acknowledging Max and his wonderful accomplishments and artistic talent.

Respectfully submitted,

Kitty Erlacher” Campbell, New York

CARDER WINDOWS ON MARKET STREET

Alan –

Next time you are sitting in the airport with Internet access, just look at the CMoG website randomly. Yesterday I discovered an article about the Carder windows on Market Street and how the glass disappears in December and reappears in April. Apparently they are going to add more photographs to the display so there is something to see in those months when there is no glass.

Scott Hansen, Briarcliff Manor, New York

PS The Carder Glass is removed from the display in winter because the angle of the sun can damage this street front glass display.

Pre-1917

This is HGM Steuben No 48. The label says Steuben Aurene Bowl. I can see the Aurene signature through the bottom of the bowl. I measured it and found that it is 3″ high and 10″ in diameter. There are two pictures of this piece–one looking down at the bowl and one showing the side profile of it. It was donated by someone other than the dentist who was the major donor.

This appears to be Steuben shape 2803. It came in all integer sizes from 6″ through 10″ plus 12″ and 14″. If I could get a better photo sometime I would like to post it on our website. Since it says only Aurene rather than Steuben Aurene it was probably made before 1917.
