MINI-STEUBEN
Gerry Gettman of McMurry, Pennsylvania wrote in to ask:
“Have you folks seen this article where US Glass is considering making Steuben on a small scale? If true, this is very exciting.”

CLUTHRA BUBBLES
This is HGM Steuben No 47. The label says it is a Steuben 10″ vase in opaline iridescent with an inverted circular rim. It is marked on the underside 2679. Is this Steuben shape # 2679?

White Cluthra
Shape #2683
A quick search of the shape index for 2679 shows that this vase is not the right shape at all to be a 2679.
It’s hard to tell from the photo, but this looks more like White Cluthra to me. It looks very much like Steuben shape number 2683.
However, the bubbles in HGM #47 appear to me to be a little different than the ones I see on examples of Steuben Cluthra. I have heard it said that the Steuben bubbles look like fried eggs. Nevertheless, the bubbles in the one in the photograph on the CSC website are less prominent than that… much like HGM #47. I defer to smarter minds than mine on this subject.
The appraiser’s description of this piece as being “iridescent” is waaaaaaay off. Cluthra can have either a shiny finish, or a satin finish, but I’ve never heard of iridescent Cluthra.
