For those who sign up again or join the Carder Steuben Club we promised a DVD showing the Rockwell Museum’s Carder Collection, toy collection and western art collections. Pleased to receive this comment:

I received my membership renewal DVD a week ago and enjoyed watching it that same day. My wife and I had seen the Steuben collection at the Rockwell Museum a few times before the glass was moved. I had forgotten how many galleries were involved and how fantastic the collection was, with so many rare pieces.

I too have just received my DVD showing the Rockwell Museum collection, upon renewing our family membership.

Great glass and great memories. A welcome gift and I thank the club and John Styler for it.

Michael Krumme raises several questions about the curetting process at the museums we’ve been visiting. Any responses?

Hi Alan,

I have been enjoying the discussion and links to museum collections (although I am a bit behind and haven’t looked at all of them yet.)

I have to say that I was a bit disappointed that the MIA’s online descriptions of the items employed generic terms for Steuben colors (“white”, “cream”, “green”, “irradescent” [sic] etc.) MIA’s website also did not use names such as “grotesque” to describe the shapes of two pieces of that type, or give the specific pattern name for the etched blue aurene vase.

Two questions:

— Is this common among museums with diverse collections?

— Are museums ever receptive to input from outside groups with specialized knowledge, who can give them assistance in better describing objects in their collections?
