I renewed my membership on line at http://cardersteubenclub.org/membership/membership-form.cfm. Club director, John Styler, has reproduced in DVD form a picture tour of the Rockwell Museum, as its exhibits existed in 2000. What is significant about this? This is just before the Rockwell glass collection was taken out of the Rockwell Museum and placed on loan at CMoG, where it is now exhibited in Building “B” as well as an exhibit on Market Street. As a new collector in 2000 I saw the Rockwell exhibits, including the incredible display in what was then the Reifschlager Gallery. It moved me to become a serious collector. The Reifschlager Gallery was important for not only the selection of its Carder glass, but to demonstrate how creative display and tremendous lighting of art glass enhances the viewers experience. Likewise the use of educational story boards can serve as a dessert to the experience. I took some time this morning to review the DVD. I forgot the power of the Rockwell exhibits. I forgot how broad the collection of Carder’s work was. The DVD shows not only the Reifschlager Gallery, but the other galleries, such as the Rotary Gallery. I also recalled that what we now see at CMoG is quite extensive, but the space at CMoG is much more limited; therefore the entire collection isn’t on display. This DVD is an important history and well worth every serious collector having in their library. John Styler, thank you for reproducing this and making it available for anyone that signs up this month for Club membership which is only $35. It also reminds us of the great debt we owe the late Bob Rockwell.

We pass along Rande Bly’s comments following the discussion in Gazette #1629 about how Intarsia is constructed.

Intarsia is almost always clear glass over an internal color. If you happen to find one in Amethyst over color this is not a legitimate reason to pass it by.
