This week’s edition of Antique Week in its Comment section is headlined A collectibles insurance policy likely a wise idea.

Some suggestions in the article, besides making sure you have insurance on your collection is:

1) Take an inventory of all of your possessions

2) Take detailed photographs

3) Store a record of your inventory on a secure website

4) Keep a printout copy off site in a safety deposit box or with a relative or friend.

5) The Insurance Information Institute offers free home inventory software at www.KnowYourStuff.org

6) Your inventory should contain detailed description of item, size, color, date of purchase. How much you paid for it (keep receipt of purchase, if possible), from whom purchased and location, current or estimated value. Also the location where and how it is stored, current or estimated value, catalog pictures of items or similar are helpful, detailed photograph and the items location.

The article concludes: “The Boy Scouts famous motto, ‘Be Prepared!’”
