Issue 1560
This past weekend I attended the long running St. Louis Antique Show held in Bellevue, Illinois. Usually not much art glass besides that from dealer, Don Williams. Much to my surprise as I rounded the corner, I was overwhelmed by a prominent and extensive display of Carder Steuben. The dealer was Luther Yocom of Private Stock. Luther reported that this was his first venture at this show. I hope Luther did well and will return. Luther reported that he does the Hoosier Antique Show in Indianapolis this coming weekend (September 7-9). Since he had to go on the road for the Hoosier show, he just thought he’d try another show in the neighborhood.
As I visited the booth I saw a handout card calling attention to appraisal work done by Luther’s wife, Patricia. She is an accredited member of the International Society of Appraisers. Why do I mention this? Many collectors need appraisals for insurance purposes, or estate, gift or charitable contribution purposes. The question is who can you use that knows not only the Internal Revenue requirements, but also has some background in Carder Steuben, Tiffany and other prominent glass creators. There are several, including people on the Gazette list. While the Carder Steuben Club doesn’t endorse or represent the quality of any of the appraisers, a good piece of information for art glass collectors is to know who is available. Patricia is one, and I invite you to suggest others that are available.
Patricia’s contact information is Patricia C. Yocom, P.O. Box 81189, Cleveland, OH 44181, 440-238-3522, LCTFavrile@aol.com
In discussing this with Luther, he pointed out that appropriate appraisals can’t be done by merely looking at pictures, but the glass has to be seen and touched. Bottom line, is it helps to know not only who the appraisers are, but their geographical locations or availability as well.
