First off, Robert Bjork adds some additional commentary on the making of Moss Agate
Michael Krumme’s description of the making of Steuben Moss Agate was essentially correct, but he overlooked one major point. Both Steuben and S & W Moss Agate glass are a crackle glass. So at some point the gather of glass must be plunged into water in order to create fissures.

Next up, Rande Bly of Birmingham, Alabama makes his case for identifying the Medieval vase pattern. You may recall about a year and half ago there was considerable discussion about this pattern because a very similar pattern was produced by Sinclaire, making it hard to identify Carder’s work. If you want to review any of those Gazette’s you can go to www.Cardersteubenclub.org and click on the Gazelle Gazette, and then do a search for the Medieval pattern.
This red vase is selling at auction in California this week. Sometimes pictures are worth a 1000 words so I will leave it mostly to that. First two pictures are from 1965 in black and white showing ACB Medieval vase with lid in Jade Green cut back to Alabaster. Next two pictures are of what is being sold as a Steuben red Medieval vase at auction this week. The next two pictures are of the Steuben Mirror Black Medieval Vase. Picture of a line drawing is included.
This sure looks like it could be a red jade to me.
Carder made
Green Jade
Light Blue Jade
Medium Blue Jade
Cobalt Jade
Pink Jade
Yellow Jade
Turquoise Jade
Amethyst Jade
(Even heard Mirror Black called Black Jade)
Come on, it seems like the only color missing is red?
I wonder what color you get when you mix cadmium sulfide from Rouge Flambé with Selenium Red and just how it looks when you stir it into Alabaster?
You really don’t think Carder just absent mindedly forgot to make red jade. One thing I bet we all agree on is you know he had to have tried to make it. I bet that red jade gave him more fits than Rouge Flambé did. He probably had to case it in crystal just to keep it from blowing up!
