Rande Bly of Birmingham, Alabama responds to Helaine Fendelman’s comments about shipping and packing. (– Alan. I have learned so much from your exchange of verbiage regarding packing. I think I could now ship an elephant properly. Thanks Helaine)
My response is to Helaine Fendelman of NYC.
Helaine,
Please let me know what week you will be properly shipping your elephant. I intend to hold shipment on all my Steuben for that week. Thank you so much.

Gerry Eggert of Syracuse, New York tells us about barrels
I thought the early glass makers used wooden barrels to ship by rail (Steuben) or boat (Fenton, Imperial, etc,.)
Hence the need for coopers.

Finally, Scott Hansen of Briarcliff, New York summarizes the foam wrapping option.
Alan –
In response to Mr. Montano’s question, No, the moving company did not tell me how to remove the foam. Charles Sweigart, in his foam description, described wrapping the glass in paper or bubble wrap first and then applying the foam. I have wondered if that wouldn’t weaken the effectiveness of the foam since voids would necessarily be created. Maybe the glass can be treated with a substance that lessens the adherence of the foam to the glass or a form of plastic wrap could be used over the glass and under the foam. Too many questions. I’m beginning to think that I am now a prisoner of my collection, either I risk serious damage to it in a move or I bankrupt myself with the cost of proper packing. If I do move, my only option might be to hire Marshall and his motor home.
