Fireworks
First, let’s celebrate the 1500th Gazette. That’s a mutual sharing of a lot of information. Carder ran the Steuben Glass Works from 1903-1931. While that’s a long time ago, we’ve kept the discovery of its history and creation fresh and current. A good example happened last week. There is a treasure trove of unexamined factory material at the Rakow Library. Marshall Ketchum and Scott Hansen went to Corning and went through some of the non-catalogued factory records at The Rakow and made new discoveries, which you’ll find in Scott’s report below. If you want to see what Scott is referring to on the www.cardersteubenclub.org website you’ll have to act fast. Marshall is adding his newly found shapes to the website and the way of tracking the new additions disappears as he keeps adding more new photos and shapes, at a frenetic pace.
Continuing Discoveries
If you haven’t done so recently, take a look at the Recent Additions section of the club web site – http://www.cardersteubenclub.org. There you will see a series of line drawings that are new to the Shape Index database. They represent primarily engraving patterns that hadn’t been pictured on the web site but also contain a new shape or two. The addition of these line drawings are the result of the continuing research by our webmaster, Marshall Ketchum, (with a little help from Scott Hansen) in the Carder Archives at the Rakow Library of the Corning Museum of Glass.
While you are in the web site, also take a look at the Undocumented section. We have previously pointed out the Green Jade Smoke Consumer shown on that page. Marshall has also added a copy of a Benson & Hedges ad that appeared in The New Yorker in 1928 showing the smoke consumer in a transparent glass. This ad was also found in Carder’s files. Note the handwritten notation “made by Steuben.” That is most likely the handwriting of Carder himself.
