First off some packaging ideas from Jo Ann Godawa of Bellevue, Nebraska

Hi Alan,

I notice that nobody has mentioned putting tissue paper inside of items. This is a must!

Adult bed pads can be purchased from medical supply stores. They come in many sizes and are perfect for packing, either with or without tissue paper around the item.

I lay the diaper (or sometimes two) down and place the item in one corner, wrapping and folding in the edges as I go. You will not need tape or a rubber band.

You can then either use bubble wrap, (the small bubbles type), or not. One 3″ piece of scotch tape on each end and one in the middle will hold just fine on the bubble wrap. I also double under each end of the tape so it’s easy to find and remove.

The main thing is that the item cannot move after being double boxed and using Styrofoam peanuts in both boxes.

Best regards,
Jo Ann Godawa

Next, to my sad story. The subject of packaging has more items in the queue and sad stories, also to tell as the week progresses. Here is my heart breaking story. Look at this picture I took at an antique show of a quartz acid etched Pilgrim Vase I purchased. Probably quite rare. The long experienced art glass dealer was going to ship this to me. Well, he placed it in a single box with lots of newspaper. Nothing else. Quartz is particularly heavy, and as you might well guess it arrived in a million pieces. I didn’t have a problem collecting on the insurance from the post office. But, much more important is this is a great piece of glass lost for eternity. What a travesty!
