USE OLD BOOKS AS SHELVES

Hi Alan,

Recently a friend sent me one of those “internet forwards with something interesting to see” type messages. It contained pictures of all these ordinary items that had been cleverly “repurposed.” I will admit that most were quite clever, but my particular interest in one of them had nothing to do with cleverness. I attach the photo captioned “Use Old Books as Shelves” for perusal. Is that an Oriental Poppy #6237 cologne bottle I spy in there?? There’s no telling where the message originated, but I’d sure like to buy the shelf set in the picture… along with the decorative objects, of course. One would want to preserve such an attractive vignette, right?

MORE IDENTIFICATION FOR THE REDLANDS HISTORIC MUSEUM

This is HGM Steuben No 41. The label says that it is a Steuben 10″ candlestick; the color is opaline iridescent; and, the pattern is spiral twist tapering stem. Joann Tortarolo

There are several shapes this might be but most of these are shape 686 and this one is probably in Verre de Soie unless it is Aqua Marine. Marshall Ketchum

CRUSHED

Alan, I was crushed when I read David Goldstein’s comments in the Gazette Tuesday. To learn that some of these 8513 copies have phony signatures (which mine doesn’t) means I have an even less valuable fake on my hands.

David is exactly correct in his description of what is wrong with the copies. The Yellow Jade color is absolutely wrong and easily and immediately distinguishable from Steuben Yellow Jade (my children learned a couple of new words when I opened the box containing my fake). The blue aurene decoration does have uneven color and, on mine, is lighter than Steuben blue aurene. Plus, the top is ground flat.

David was fortunate to be able to return his vases and obtain a refund. That was obviously not the case with my vase. The auction house pointed to their terms and conditions which, like every other auction house, make no representations about what is being sold, require the bidder to know what he is buying and to do his own inspection or have someone do it for him. The vase could not be returned. Legally correct on the part of the auction house but perhaps not the best business decision. Caveat Emptor. My vase sits on the shelf with the rest of my mistakes, which, to soothe my ego, I refer to as my “study collection.”
