Gwen Stebbins recalls:
Michael Krumme’s comments reminded me of “back in the day”
In the mid 80’s we (Plantation Galleries) decorated a famous landmark restaurant in the Detroit area called “The Wagon Wheel Saloon”. We put original fixtures with art glass shades, Tiffany lamps and windows, other name hanging lamps and windows from the early part of the 20th Century and unusual architectural items. The most fun part of doing it was going to the Wagon Wheel for lunch or dinner and watching the people actually touch the pieces. You knew from the atmosphere this was the real deal and not replica pieces. I cannot tell you how many times I saw people put their hands on the lamps and touch the gargoyles on the furniture. Of course, I always felt the need to walk up and explain what they were looking at and people really enjoyed hearing the stories and knowing they were right…….that this piece was something special.
Unfortunately, the Wagon Wheel was sold to a large corporation and was dismantled so it could be light and airy and “new”.
Another famous restaurant for its decor was Gulliver’s in the Chicago area. Who remembers it and the hanging lamps and great shades they had?
