Club President, David Goldstein of Naples, was interviewed for a story on the impact of the closing of the Steuben factory.
On Tuesday, November20 I was interviewed by a reporter for WSKG, the Binghamtom PBS radio station, for a story about the closing of Steuben Glass which is supposed to air on November 28th. Matt Richmond, the reporter doing the story, asked if I was surprised by the closing. I told him that it was totally predictable since Shottenstein had closed on its purchase of Steuben at just about the worst possible time. They bought Steuben , a failing luxury goods company, at a time when the economy was depressed and the market for luxury goods like Steuben was shrinking.
We discussed the history of Steuben and the Carder Steuben Club. I explained the difference between Carder Steuben and Modern Steuben, and the fact that the Club focused on Colored Carder Steuben, which is more collectible than the modern Steuben. I suggested that he take a look at our website, www.cardersteubenclub.org.
Matt asked if I thought the closing would affect the value of Steuben and I told him that the resale value of functional pieces such as bowls and vases was already depressed. I also told him that the more unusual pieces were holding their value better than the more common ones. He asked how the closing would affect the Club and I told him we would have to consider expanding our scope to include collectors of Modern Steuben.
I enjoyed the interview and the opportunity to promote our Club.
