Bob Mueller of the Minneapolis area responds
DEAR SCOTT–I WOULD LEAVE THE VASE AS IT IS. I HAVE SEEN SOME SHADES ALONG THE WAY THAT I WAS VERY SURE HAD THE “”RAW UMBER’ ( APPLIED UMBER MIXTURE) EFFECT TO THEM . SOME HAD A VERY DEEP EFFECT IN COLOR,AND SOME A VERY LIGHT COLOR TO THEM . WE HAVE ALL SEEN HOW OTHER TYPES OF CARDER STEUBEN SUCH AS HIS JADES,WHEN WE LOOK AT THE RANGE GREEN JADE OR ROSALINE WHEN IT HAS BEEN ACID ETCHED AND THE COLOR SOME PEOPLE WILL WONDER IF IT IS OR NOT, AND THE SAME GOES WITH “RAW UMBER. EACH PIECE WILL ALSO HAVE A DIFFERENT EFFECT DUE TO ITS SHAPE ALSO. THE DESIGN IN THE PIECE.
I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU OUT AND HOPE THAT MORE PEOPLE GIVE US MORE INFORMATION TO SOMETHING THAT LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT OR SEEN. BUT I WOULD TELL YOU AGAIN DO NOT TOUCH THE UMBER IN THIS PIECE .IN ALL THE PIECES IN THE GARDNER BOOK THEY ARE ALSO LATER CAT.NO.,SO THAT TELLS US THAT THERE NO DOUBT WERE LESS OF THESE ITEMS AROUND,OR THEY WERE SPECIAL ORDERS ITEMS FROM THE LAMP COMPANIES MR. CARDER DEALT WITH.
IN PAUL GARDNERS BOOK P. 112 ,IT SHOWS 4 PIECES OF RAW UMBER AND IS CALLLED “RAW UMBER” .BUT ALSO IN A 1920,S COLOR AD THAT ALOT OF MEMBERS HAVE CALLED “”MODERN GLASS””IT SHOWS THE SAME 3 PIECES AS IN PAUL,S BOOK BUT ALSO NO WHERE IS “RAW AMBER” IS MENTIONED IN THIS COLOR AD ,BUT IT IS THE SAME AD.

Peter Bennett of Rochester, New York adds “tongue in cheek”
The piece is hopelessly compromised. I suggest that it be donated to the next Carder Steuben Club auction.
