We’re past the midpoint in May. It’s not too soon to begin planning to attend the Carder Steuben Club Symposium, which will be held on Friday, September 16 and Saturday, September 17 in conjunction with and at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York. While the official event is those two days, you need to consider being in Corning all day Thursday, September 15, and Sunday, September 18.

Why is that you asked? Well, Thursday presents any number of opportunities. First, is the many antique shops and venues that carry Carder Steuben glass. Symposium attendees will be found circulating on the “main drag” of Corning. Corning is a vibrant town with a charming downtown featuring many interesting and unique individually owned shops.

Second, is the opportunity on Thursday afternoon to go to the Rakow Library and participate in the volunteer programming of going through special stacks and boxes of unexplored documents that pertain to Mr. Carder. More about that in coming e-mails from the Symposium Chair, Scott Hansen.

Then Thursday night will be a dealers’ show at the Radisson Hotel to see Carder offerings for sale and a chance to mingle with a lot of fascinating and interesting people who you’ll be sharing the Symposium with. Also, Thursday is a good time to go through the Corning Museum. While you’ll be at the Museum on Friday and Saturday, you’ll have limited opportunity to walk through at your leisure that which is the finest glass museum in the world. The extensive programming of the Symposium leaves little time for a good touring opportunity.

Now to Sunday. This also an ideal time to visit the Corning Museum with time to spare to really take it all in. Likewise, there is the Rockwell Museum of Western Art that has some Carder glass on display. Rich museum offerings for this small community. Mr. Carder was born on September 18, 1863. Every year Tom & Peetie Dimitroff sponsor a formal dinner to celebrate Mr. Carder’s birthday on the 18th. Usually this is held at the Corning Country Club. Tom & Peetie usually line up some wonderful Carder programming and speakers. Much of the Corning glass world shows up for this dinner. It is one of those Corning must attend events. Tom & Peetie extend an invitation to those attending the Symposium to sign up and attend. It is usually a glorious night. Unfortunately, in most years the Symposium and the dinner don’t overlap, they’re just close in time. This year the birthday party is just one day after the Symposium ends, and with good planning you can attend. It is always a special evening to remember, toast and honor the man who made all of this happen.

Today my wife was featured in our local Evansville, Indiana newspaper for her baking prowess. While this has nothing to do with this newsletter, many on the mailing list know her and might enjoy seeing the article. I guess that’s the privilege of editing this newsletter. I can insert the url link.
