Susan Saul’s the University of Southern Indiana Art Collection Registrar has done a wonderful job in describing some of Carder’s works in the context of art and art form. The last Gazette description This vase takes on a shape reminiscent to the Greek form “Krater”, which translates “to mix”. The Ancient Greeks would use this form vessel for mixing water or wine speaks to this. Unfortunately, we don’t address art glass often enough in terms of its artistry and Carder’s use of classic shapes for the inspiration of his work.
Anyhow, Ulysses Dietz of the Newark Museum sends this along.
I’ve never responded to one of your emails, but this put me in mind to send along a photo of a tall (16”) Steuben blue aurene piece we (the Newark Museum) bought from the Steuben shop in NYC in 1927 for $35. Our director then really liked classical forms.
