Issue 915
From Michael Krumme of LA
Hi All,
Today I drove a quick 15 miles or so down to breezy Redondo Beach, California to “walk and shop” the 12th annual Redondo Beach, California International Antiques Fair. From the flyer and program I received at the show today, I can’t divine an internet website for the event, so for those of you who don’t live here in So. Cal., let me tell you about it.
Though much reduced in size from years past, when there was an outdoor tented area with many more sellers, it was still worth attending, particularly if you like art glass. There were several dealers who had some fine examples of French art glass such as Schneider, Galle’, Daum Nancy, and others, as well as American art glass such as Tiffany, Quezal, and of course, Carder-era Steuben.
Though I did not spot any transcendent examples of C.E.S. for sale (i.e., Intarsia, Tyrian, cire perdu, etc.), there were some nice things for sale, including pieces in jade green and jade green with alabaster (ditto as to Rosaline), some gold and blue Aurene pieces, including a fairly large blue Aurene lamp in one of the classic shapes, and miscellaneous items, the best of which was a plum jade small bowl with one of the acid cutback type patterns.
Don’t get me wrong — it’s not something worth jumping on a plane to attend, but if you live in this area, it’s worth a visit. Aside from perhaps the annual Los Angeles Antiques Show that is held every May, it’s probably the highest concentration of art glass that you’re going to see in our area.
Unfortunately, my only purchase was a reference book on Schneider glass, but honestly, I was there more to observe and learn than to add something to my collection. But if the right piece of Mirror Black had materialized, I might have jumped.
