Let The Buyer Beware

Interesting thoughts from Willson Craigie of Richmond, Virginia

We’re relatively inexperienced, have been burned on e-bay and been blessed on e-bay. I have had very good success with returns and the support e-bay gives in tough situations. It’s my opinion that the club cannot respond as “experts” on e-bay offerings. Our club would wind up being inundated with hot and bothered buyers/sellers and do nothing but harm our image. However, we do join the club to make good friends, learn about Frederick Carder and Steuben’s wonderful art and support each other when we can.

I did have an experience with a Tiffany candle holder: “Tiffinyfakes.com” – what a bunch of pompous folks – No names of human beings, no education, not even polite discourse: no location, no references or qualifications. It was a horrible experience. When I have the time, the candle holder will be in the hands of the Va. Museum curator of our Tiffany collection: I’ll then know for sure what the score is.

In my experiences with e-bay, I see the most positive, helpful and honest comment coming from Marshall Ketchum. He’s a jewel to anyone trying to learn about Carder Steuben. He is always willing to help without offending people or playing “The king (and only source) of knowledge”.

Collectors of anything will always find folks who are not knowledgeable and sometimes dishonest……. they’ll not survive over a cycle and will drift into space

in the pursuit of a buck.

Next, “Buyer Beware” comments from David Donaldson of Orlando. Florida

“eBay”, a most interesting place, and I will admit a good place to sneak up on some lovely glass. However, bear in mind that eBay’s policy is stated on their site. In so many words, it states: “Buyer Beware”. Hence, it is wise to study an object, read the necessary books, do your needed research, and then, still proceed with caution. Remember, the final decision in a purchase remains with the buyer not an advisor.

David Donaldson
