Issue 876
Following Bob Mueller’s synopsis of Rouge Flambe, Rande Bly of Birmingham, Alabama) adds some comments on Rouge Flambe
This is the perfect chance to ask. I noticed that Rouge Flambe seems to have two definite time periods at Steuben. Dimitroff dates its start around 1916. I have an original color “House and Beautiful” magazine ad dating to 1926 featuring the Rouge Flambe plate shown at a table setting on top of a larger Mirror Black plate. It seems that the earlier pieces carry the Chinese shape like we see with the Mandarin Jade pieces. Starting somewhere after 1926 they seem to evolve to pieces like footed bowls, plates, and tooth brush holders. I remember back in the early 1970’s holding a piece of Mr. Rockwell’s Chinese shaped Rouge Flambe while he represented to me its value of about $20,000. If I recall my information correctly a piece of decorated Rouge Flambe recently brought around $50,000. My question is when viewing the glass in person side by side is there any color tone change in these two categories? From what I understand there is no color variation.
