Moss Agate

May 1, 2010
Issue 848

If one wishes to see the inspiration (perhaps) for moss agate glass visit the Pierpont Morgan Library and Museum at 36th St. and Madison Ave. in NYC. The large columns you will see could be examples of Mr. Carder’s glass were they not the real thing. One can imagine that Carder may have seen these in visits to NYC while planning glass for the major installations of the early 1930’s. And while you are there look for the Etruscan cista which I am told was the actual example that L.C. Tiffany saw and tied to emulate in the patina on his bronze pieces, therefore perhaps one of the most important bronze items on public display in NY. I enjoy reading the newsletters. keep up the good work. regards bob weinberg

LIsa Ackerman of Orange, CA comments on Hawkes signage
Thank you Alan for keeping us informed! I think it’s wonderful that the Hawkes sign is being restored. I’ve been involved with a similar effort here in Orange for some of our painted-on-masonry signs.
Also glad we could help the WVMAG. Someday I want to visit there! (Do we know if there’s any Carder Steuben in their museum?)
The link that shows the Hawkes building….is that the front of the building or the rear? Just curious.
