PAINTING UP FOR SALE

Sep 22, 2009
Issue 687

I’m delighted to report on behalf of auction chairman, Marshall Ketchum, that we’ve received a gift from the late Bob Rockwell of a painting done by Frederick Carder. This painting will be auctioned Saturday night October 3, 2009 at the Symposium’s closing banquet auction. Mr. Carder painted a number of oils when he was in his 90’s.

In an earlier Gazette we pictured an urn in red. Lon Knickerbocker reported that many of these small urns were marked with the identifying “S” etched. Someone said they thought that stood for Sinclair. Lon responds
There are 3 different single s signatures. The Sinclair s is an acid stamp mark in a wreath, Steuben had a small s mark also in an acid stamp in a plain circle, but it is seldom seen and the mark I was speaking of was a diamond point pencil scratched s.

For those attending the Symposium remember to bring a picture (preferably burned on a cd) or a piece of glass for either or both of “You Can Only Keep One” e.g your favorite piece of Steuben, or the “Identification Clinic. That is questions about a piece you have; e.g. is it Steuben, color or how it was made? Both programs should be most interesting and crowd pleasing. At this time it looks like a record crowd for the Symposium.
