Next, about a year ago, Scott Hansen, one of the Club’s officers, learned of the existence of a collection of black and white photographs of Carder Steuben included in Frederick Carder’s archives at the Rakow Library at CMoG. These photographs had never been individually catalogued as part of the Rakow’s collection nor had they been published. Scott approached the Club Board with a proposal to pursue a joint project between the Rakow Library and the Club to catalogue these photographs and make them more accessible. The Board approved this project.
Working with the Rakow staff (you’ll meet them at the Symposium), Marshall Ketchum and Scott catalogued these photographs, re-housed them in archival folders (many of the photographs had suffered water damage in the 1972 flood and were at risk of deterioration), identified the objects and their characteristics, digitized each of the photographs and created a database of information related to each image. In all, 575 unique photographs were processed.
Many of the glass objects in the photographs will be familiar to us, but Marshall and Scott have found some previously undocumented shapes and patterns. While the Library continues to work with these photographs and the database, the Rakow has graciously given us permission to show a slide show of these photographs during the Symposium on Saturday. Barring any technical difficulties, we will show a slide show of these photographs during registration Saturday morning as well as during lunch on Saturday.
