EDUCATION PROCESS BY DEBATE

Sep 14, 2009
Issue 673

Today we sent out an article by Rande Bly on Carder Steuben’s color Cardinal Red. Well, some disagree and feel this piece may be English or from Corning, Inc.
Maybe from Carder during his English period at Stevens & Williams, or who knows. Anyway, here are Marshall Ketchum’s counter opinion on the piece.
I know that the English made it and also Corning Glass outside of Steuben. The stopper is not the usual flame stopper that one usually sees on a 1455. I have seen others like this one over the years and also in a dark green. There is nothing in the existing factory records that I have that helps.
Much glass is inspired and copied from other makers. Occasionally it is difficult to identify a piece with absoluteness. This is a good example where debate and disagreement may reign. The experts don’t always agree. At any rate, we try to be “fair and balanced”.
