CZECH BLANKS & BUYING OR SELLING GLASS

Aug 15, 2009
Issue 650

First, from Charles Sweigart of Reinholds, PA:
Rockwell Sterling also put silver overlay on china. I recently purchased an interesting group of yellow & black Art Deco glasses with Rockwell marks decorated w/silver overlay in a Gazelle design. Along with the six matching Rockwell pieces was a 7th virtually identical, but signed Czechoslovakia . There are very subtle variations between the 2 visible only under close scrutiny. I would say the Rockwell pieces are certainly Czech blanks.

Next, why do people attend the Club’s Symposium (this year Oct. 1–Oct. 3)? Of course, a host of reasons. But one, which is unadvertised, is that typically on the Thursday, right before the Symposium you arrive with all your enthusiasm and begin the process by walking down Market Street in Corning and take in the antique shops where the largest collection of Carder Steuben Glass for sale to be found in one place is located. This is reinforced by a “knock out” exhibition of some of Mr. Carder’s best works that can be viewed in a large store front series of windows on Market Street presented by the Corning Museum of Glass (sadly, not for sale). This is only a prelude of what is to come. Come back in the dark of evening to see this CMoG display under lights for a treat to the senses. And, don’t forget, on Saturday night the Club at its annual dinner will also feature its auction of Carder glass.

Most attendees of the Symposium come for this unique opportunity to hope to find those special pieces to buy of Carder Steuben glass. Last year several people took to selling some Steuben in their hotel rooms and this added to the excitement of the weekend. Actually, most collecting clubs events feature hotel buying and it creates opportunities for everyone. Having said all of this, if anyone, be it a dealer or a collector is wanting to sell some of their things or whatever, just let us know and we’ll be pleased to publicize it and where you can be found. The biggest problem is that the Symposium calendar is chock full of activities. So, if you are planning to do some buying you’ll want to arrive early on Thursday to take in Market Street, and the comradery that comes with that and also whatever hotel room buying should develop. Otherwise there is very limited time between the Symposium; largely in the short period following the Symposium program and getting ready for dinners when there is a little downtime. So, if you will be bringing things to sell, just let us know and we’ll be pleased to send out a message on the Gazette, including all dealers in Corning. A Symposium is about fun and buying and selling is part of a collectors fun.
