First things first–John Styler of Prospect Height, Illinois sent me this “personal” note in response to the Symposium coming up Oct. 1-3 in Corning, NY. While we don’t usually print off registrations I thought the quick and enthusiastic response couldn’t be ignored.
I made my Choice Hotel reservations, 1st to the 4th, sent in my check to Lon, and fly in on the 1st, too late for the events but will be at the “DiGiorno” Pizza event, looking forward to meeting all of you.
In another note from John he made a great suggestion.
Alan, I don’t know how one lobbies to have a postage stamp dedicated to a particular subject or person but I plan to look into it. Is there a memorable anniversary, birth dates you name it for either Steuben, Frederick Carder, that you can think of. I know there was one group of 4 – 33 cent stamps in 1999 featuring Art Glass, Pressed Glass, Mold Blown Glass & Free Blown Glass. As a stamp collector we see some rather pathetic subjects on stamps. It would be interesting to find some way to introduce the issue to the Postal service.

Well, John that would be a great idea to have a Carder postage stamp. A figure of a piece of Carder’s glass, or Mr. Carder. The post office missed the 100th anniversary in 1903 of the Steuben Glass Works. Mr. Carder won’t be 150 years old until 2013. However, maybe in the next year or two there could be a “hook” that could interest the post office. John has offered to do some leg work on how to go about interesting the postal service; however, he needs some ideas on the “hook”. The reason to present.
