Beth Shaut of the Carder Steuben shop in Corning, NY responds to why no paperweights at Carder’s Steuben.
I’d like to comment on Scott Hansen’s remarks about Steuben making paperweights. We all must remember Steuben opened originally to make glass blanks for cutting by T.G.Hawkes Cut Glass and went into production of Housewares for use in the homes of the rich and prominent for entertaining and decorating. They did some pieces used for desk set but not many as you didn’t entertain in the library except for an occasional cigar smoked by the men while the woman retired to the sitting.
