Richmond, Virginian, Wilson Craigie had an early piece of glass he was asking about after seeing Bob Mueller’s article in this newsletter (#542) along with its pictures, on cut and engraved glass. Lo and behold, fellow Richmond resident, Bonnie Salzman, replies
Wilson Craigie posed in Gazette #543 regarding an early vase. Attached is a picture of a perfume in the same color and decoration. I too believe this to be a very early piece. This is based on the comments with the bowl of the same color and decoration pictured in the Gardner book (Ill. 57, p. 32).
Then Wilson Craigie’s response to Bonnie
My goodness – from Richmond !!!! Thank you for your interest and information. I am surprised how this has interested me and the research (though non-professional) time I have spent. I found every Durand reference to similar shapes possible and any others which might be conclusive. I keep coming right back to Steuben’s shape number 1979. The writings of Gardner about the early years and Carder’s work for Hawkes followed by his early exquisite work on clear crystal decorated and cut pieces: it certainly makes sense to me. I assume that a number 1979 shape would have first been made during the 1903-1908 time frame?? I’d love to find an authoritative photo somewhere of that shape.
The vase is a very beautiful work of art. I’ll hope that the Craigies and the Salzmans will get together soon !!! Thank you all.
