With this newsletter we are looking for questions and then invite answers that may be help to collectors. A major problem of collecting for the new collector is that there are fewer hands on opportunities to connect with major Steuben dealers and collectors because of losses like the recent loss of Bob Rockwell, having fewer antique shows with substantial offerings of Steuben and diminishing numbers of quality antique shops. Therefore, how does a beginning collector learn; how do they get the experience of seeing and touching the glass? One way is the Carder Steuben Club’s Symposium. Specifically, on Thursday, Oct. 1, before the formal program begins we will have a specific session at CMoG for just the relatively new collector, coupled with some experienced collector hands available to teach.

As some of the earlier Gazettes have suggested, perhaps the first studio art glass artist was Mr. Carder then in his 70’s and no longer in charge of the Steuben factory created a small furnace in his small office, after 1932. Later we know his neighbor, Harvey Littleton, visited his studio and Mr. Littleton is credited now to be a founder of the studio art movement. So, with that background our question for today is:
Where should a beginner start research to learn about the studio art glass movement?
