Next, from Scott Hansen, Chair of this year’s Symposium.
Each year, following the Symposium closing banquet on Saturday night (October 3 this year), the club conducts a fund raising auction of glass and glass-related items. Members and friends of the club provide the items to be auctioned. The proceeds from the auction constitute a major source of funds for the club and its activities. In the past, items have sold for as little as $10 and as much as almost $5,000. In the coming months, please take a look at your overcrowded display cabinets or shelves or your storage closet and consider selecting an item for the auction. Or, you can do as others do while at a show or auction, in a shop, or surfing the Internet, and buy something specifically for the auction. In addition to glass, books, catalogs, posters and ephemera have also been included in the auction. Last year, Mark Chamovitz won the creativity award for bringing a glass pyramid and diamond point scribe to the Symposium and collecting autographs on the pyramid of members and guests in attendance. It sold for several hundred dollars at the auction. Amy Blake contributed more than a dozen perfume bottle stoppers, all of which sold, proving that there is a bottle for every stopper. Early this coming summer, Marshall Ketchum (mdketchum@yahoo.com), chair of the auction, will distribute complete details about how to include items in the auction and the related financial arrangements. It’s possible to donate items completely or retain a portion of the proceeds and maybe even “make” money on your item (more specifics about the financial arrangements will be included in Marshall’s letter).
