What are we collectors about?

At our upcoming Symposium (Sept. 18-20 at CMoG in Corning, NY) Florida art
glass dealer David Goldstein, Los Angeles marketing executive John D. Clayton &
New York City art connoisseur Audrey Lipton are going to get into what should
be a fascinating panel discussion on, What are we collectors about? How should
we market Carder Steuben? and, What role do we have in the art scene? Should
be a fascinating introspective discussion. Here is a copy of Audrey Lipton’s
dialogue with her fellow presenters to tempt your taste.

How this unique and important body of work is perceived in the marketplace is
more relevant today than ever. The universe of collectors is shrinking; it is also
growing older. We must explore and test ways to engage younger collectors. As you probably
know, the American art pottery market has gone from a vital, ever more valuable
area of collecting to an area sold by few important dealers or major auction
galleries – except for the most extraordinary and unique objects, prices have
plummeted. E-bay just accelerated the downward momentum. How can we avoid
this fate for Carder Steuben at a time when the mid-century modern and
thereafter market has become the dominant design focus. Whenever I see a
major piece of Carder glass on e-bay surrounded by fakes and tableware I just
cringe. If beluga caviar were sold at Burger King, would the luxury market flock
there to savor it? Or might it just be on its way to being perceived as cat food!
