Sharing. Mark Amato wanted to contribute to the Unity of Metal & Glass, but
only had a piece of Durand with Metal, so he sent pictures of that which are
posted today. Mark notes that many of you enjoy the pictures. Well, we need
people like Mark who will supply jpgs so they can be shared. I encourage all of
you when at a show, auction or dealer to take pictures and share. Or, just if you
have thoughts or ideas to share. This is only as good as the input we receive.

Mark writes:
Dear Mr. Shovers: I have watched all the pictures of Steuben glass and metal
with great enthusiasm and would like to contribute. The only piece I have is
Durand and metal. Perhaps you would like to show other glassmakers and
metal. If they are like me they are hungry for pictures of any new

First, I didn’t know how our theme of Shared Desires: The Unity of Metal &
Glass could divide couples. John Maryanski sent us a picture of his piece. Diane
wants to know from John why he didn’t send a picture of her silver encased
sherbet set. Well, here is the link:

Second, Jo Ann Godawa asks about the source of her metal. Beth Shaut
responds:
I think that her stand was made next door to the Steuben Glass Works on Erie
Avenue (today known as Dennison Parkway) Pieces that needed metal base were
sometimes sent next door to the I believe is was called Corning Metal Works but
I maybe wrong with its name.

Finally, Jane Spillman reports that the just-published JOURNAL OF GLASS
STUDIES has Carder’s journal of his trip to Germany and Bohemia in 1902, with
his own hand-drawn illustrations. It’s not about Steuben, of course, but it is
about Carder. At the Symposium we’ll have a table of items of interest for sale
that might be of interest and a little hard to find. CD’s, books, and also this
Journal.
