The Executive Committee of the Carder Steuben Club met today. Some of the highlights of that
meeting are as follows:
The tentative program for the Club’s Symposium, Shared Desires: A Unity of Glass &
Metal, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 14 & Sat. Sept. 15 at CMoG, along with pre-program
events of Thursday Sept. 13 were approved.
Group Discussion for Saturday morning at the Symposium was reviewed. It is intended that
participants focus on bringing their pieces combined with metal, for discussion. Also, those
who have a stopper and not a base, or a base without a cover, or the such could bring their
odd pieces so that mates might be found.
It was suggested that the program should indicate ,if space can be found, that in addition to the airport at Elmira/Corning, there are convenient airports at Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Binghamton.
The target date for mailing the Symposium brochure is the beginning of July.
The recommendation for the next Symposium to the membership at the business meeting at
the Symposium will be Sept. 19 & 20, 2008. The usual tradition has been to try and schedule
the Symposium as close in time as possible to Frederick Carder’s birthday, of September 18.
Discussion will take place at the business meeting as to whether there would be a desire to
have a future Symposium in another locale, such as St. Louis, the Wichita Museum, San
Francisco, Seattle, Miami or the Chrysler or Toledo Museums.
Another area of considerable discussion that will be brought to the membership meeting is
whether the Club should consider expanding the auction to a nationwide auction. This would
involve engaging a national auction firm that would undertake a strictly Carder Steuben
auction that would involve a catalogue, national publicity and possibly a tie in to eBay’s live auction. No recommendation from the Executive Committee, but a subject for discussion to expand the reach of the Club.
Dick Bright as Immediate Past President was appointed as nomination chair. Any thoughts or
recommendation should be directed to Dick. rbright@stny.rr.com
It’s time to begin seeking membership renewals or new applications. Two significant benefits
of membership are membership in CMoG and e-mails of the Gazelle Gazette. An application
is attached. Please sign up now.
Mark Buffa, our webmaster reported on the web site. The number of pages has been
growing from 53,000 pages per year to 120,000 pages viewed last year and we’re now at the
rate of 140,000 pages this year. 4,000 hits per year. Mark also reported that the number
of images on the pages have grown significantly. Also, many subtle structural things have
been completed to make the site increasingly reach in usage.
Under old business the inquiry to seeking archival papers at Alfred was reported on.
Unfortunately, the response from Alfred is: We are sorry but at the present time, the
PVGGC files are not accessible. We hope to be up and running in the near future.
The Gazette’s retrospective on the Reifschlager gallery brought on some recollections.
Here are Dave Williams:
Thank you so much for sharing this with all. Helen and I had visited many times, at least twice a year in the ’80’s & ’90’s. On one special occasion, Tom Dimitroff was giving a guided tour and part way through, Paul Gardner walked in. Tom relinquished his time to Paul to elaborate. Once while riding the elevator in the Smithsonian, Paul and I were alone. I told him how much we have enjoyed and treasured his book. He said that he never made a dime from it because it was
written when he was employed by the Smithsonian.
