Issue 218
May your 2007 collecting be glorious. Just pleased I could put in a date and not
inadvertently write 2006.
Several items to address:
I. From Tom Dimitroff. Some pictures of the cut glass exhibit at the
Carder gallery in Building “B” at CMoG. Tom promises more to come.
1. II. Jane Spillman sends along the following:
I just got my Metropolitan Museum catalog and they are offering a colorless “Oval Glass Bowl Designed by Frederick Carder”. It’s a reproduction, of course, produced with the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Mass. Currently, it’s on sale for $19.99 and I thought it was possible some Carder collectors might like to purchase it, since it can be used, not just admired!
I hope someone will send along a picture to be shared. We haven’t been able to purchase a Carder piece at this price since the 1930’s.
III. Get out your 2007 calendars. Go to September and mark out Sept. 13,14 &
15. Yes, with the new year it is time to start planning the Carder Steuben Club’s
annual Symposium in Corning. This year’s event will have a theme: SHARED
DESIRES; A UNITY OF GLASS AND METAL. Jim Barlow is leading the way
with a presentation of an often ignored area. The metal manufacturers who
bought glass from Mr. Carder and the glass they bought. We have lined up an
expert on Oscar Bach and Roycroft. Jim and Mark Buffa will address lamp
makers. There are quite a surprising number. Of course, DeVilbiss is another
aspect. Jim is looking for those who have knowledge or glass combined with
metal to show their wares or speak on their knowledge. Hopefully, ideas or
volunteers will step forward. This could be a most interesting symposium.
