Symposium to be held Sept. 14-16

Aug 14, 2006
Issue 179

Several items of note. First, the printed brochures for the Symposium to be held Sept. 14-16 are out. You didn’t receive one? Sorry about that. It seems that 48 people in the data base didn’t have one mailed to them. Don’t ask why. Grrrrrr. That old computer glitch excuse. You may get one yet, but print out the attachment to this e-mail which is the Symposium brochure.
Next, everyone who is a Carder Steuben Club member should be getting an invitation from Tom & Peetie Dimitroff to the annual birthday party of Frederick Carder. It will be held on his birthday, Monday Sept. 18 at the Corning Country Club. (2006-1863=143rd birthday). Jane Spillman will speak on Mr. Carder’s cut glass. If you’re not a Club member and would like an invitation just let me know and I’ll pass that on, for everyone is invited. Tom apologizes for getting the invitations out so late, but as you know he has had health problems. Progressing, but ever so slowly.
Take a look at http://brokenshards.homestead.com/7091.html
Our webmaster Mark Buffa has posted a series of pictures of various shaded Grotesque bowls,
shape 7091. Open up the picture and see a dialogue comparing Mr. Carder’s Grotesque to the
Duncan Miller look a likes and information on distinguishing one from other. Mark will be posting even better pictures the next few days. While viewing this explore the Club’s website. Our site is rich in content and this is a good example.
The final item has nothing to do with Carder or glass. One of my associates was preparing to do a seminar on PUDs. What’s that you ask. Well it stands for Planned Unit Development. That’s zoning and other municipal activities to enrich a community. In the course of research a brochure popped up prepared by the NYS Legislative Commission on Rural Resources. And, there was a picture of Market Street in Corning. The caption reads: “Corning, in South Central New York in the heart of the Finger Lakes, is filled with small town charm along with a fascinating history and strong commitment to the arts and entertainment. It has been successful in using planned unit development in its Historic Market Street area.” As my wife will attest, downtown Corning is a delight and a wonderful shopping experience. It’s a real treat for attendees at the Symposium
